Skate Canada

Hi there, I am one of the Co-Chief Therapists for the Skate Canada east/west
challenge, coming up in early December in Mississauga. This is a National
level, 5-day event that we need therapy coverage for. Last year, we had many
Physiotherapists, Athletic Therapists and Chiropractors come out to the
event, and it was a big success.

Skate Canada is looking for therapists to volunteer at the upcoming Skate
Canada East/West Challenge Event. The event will take place at the Hershey
Centre in Mississauga from December 2nd to 6th, 2009, so save the date now.
Physiotherapists, athletic therapists or chiropractors (students and new
grads welcome) are needed to cover the medical clinic that will be set up
on-site, as well as on-ice coverage for all the practice and competition
rinks. There will always be several people working at one time, including
physicians, (and on-site paramedics) so you would never be alone. Students
would automatically be paired with other experienced therapists. This
volunteer opportunity requires a minimum 6 hour shift commitment. If you are
interested, please contact Miriam Granek, Co-Chief Therapist.
If you know of day and shift preferences, then let her know which days would
work for you, as well as time of day preferences (i.e. morning, afternoon
or evening shift). If you are free on a weekday (Wed-Fri), please let
Miriam know, since those shifts are the hardest to fill. (Even if you
don't know your schedule yet, just let Miriam know that you are interested,
and she can put you on the list). You can also sign up online at this Skate
Canada volunteer link:
https://members.skatecanada.ca/memberreg/createnewaccount.cfm If you aren't
interested, but know someone else who might be, please pass this
information along to them.

Update on the Use of PowerTape and PowerFlex

RE: Andover Medical products at the November 2009 practical examination.

Recently, you received email notification of a change in materials that would be available for use by Certification Candidates at the November 2009 practical examination. The notification stated that PowerFlex and PowerTape would be available for use by the Certification Candidates.

Unfortunately, this announcement was a bit premature. The Andover products (PowerFlex and PowerTape) referred to in the message, are fairly recent additions to the arsenal of products available for support techniques. In fact, the products are new enough that they are not available at all of the accredited institutions nor are the products familiar to all certified members and Certification Candidates. Because some of the certified members will be evaluating the performances of the Certification Candidates at the November examination, it is essential that all examiners be familiar with these products and their use.

Therefore, to avoid the risk of improper evaluation by the examiners, the PowerFlex and PowerTape products will not be available for use by Certification Candidates at the November 2009 practical examination.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause but it is essential that we ensure the fair evaluation of the Certification Candidates’ performances.

We will work towards the inclusion of these products in future practical examinations and pending favourable consideration, will make the membership aware of the date on which this addition will occur in a timely manner.
