Volunteer Oppotunity

March 23, 2010
Dear Sheridan Exercise Science and Health Promotion Students,

My name is Meghan and I am the Child and Youth Program Facilitator at Angela’s Place. Here at Angela’s Place we provide short term transitional housing to families in need.

We have children and youth here ranging from 0-16 and I am looking for students who would be interested in leading in-house fitness and recreational activities. We have two spaces that we can use for the programming and the main programming would take place for one hour after school each week for two different age groups (Age 6-11 and 12-16). We are looking at exposing our clients to as much as possible in the hopes that they will be able to have options and to continue on with healthy habits after they leave Angela’s Place.

This volunteer position would require a four week commitment in order to provide consistency for the children. Please contact me if you are interested and would like more information!

Thank you,

Meghan Low

Steve Lidstone as Guest Speaker

On Tuesday, April 6, 11am-12pm in B215, Steve Lidstone will be providing
an employment seminar for the second year ESHP students. It was thought
that this seminar may be also for AT students as Steve Lidstone is an AT
who converted his skills into a head strength and conditioning coach
position at McMaster University. Steve was the first full-time
University strength coach in Ontario, was/is the head strength coach for
Hockey Canada and Trampoline Canada, and has worked with many medalists
at multiple Olympic Games and World Championships. He will tell the
story of how he moved from a diploma to a Kin degree, AT certificate,
and then largely educated himself in the strength and conditioning field
through networking with others in the field. He combines an excellent
balance of movement retraining with advanced strength and conditioning
techniques to optimize his athlete's performance.

For more information, contact Trevor Cottrell.

Shave for the Brave!

Shave for the Brave is happening at Sheridan!

For those of you who are not familiar with this event, it is a fundraiser with all proceeds going to Young Adult Cancer Canada. There are many ways to participate and I hope that everyone can take part in some way. We will have student volunteers shaving heads in order to raise money, raise awareness, and donate hair for the making of wigs.

We are hoping that all years will show great interest in the event by raising money and shaving or donating! A hair donation is a minimum of 10 inches if shaving is too drastic for you.

To register online, please visit: www.shaveforthebrave.ca Click on "Shavers" and then "Register". On the left there will be a "New Participants. Sign Up". Make sure you choose Sheridan from the drop bar.

If anyone would like to volunteer in any way please contact Ashley at ashley.hiscock@sheridanc.on.ca

Please feel free to invite any student you know in the Athletic Therapy or ESHP programs! I hope to see you all in the Emerg room (H144) at 2pm on March 24th!

Lacrosse Posting

Hi Kirsty,

How are you doing? I hope that all is well as you get set up for comps. I'm looking for a student to help me out with the KW Kodiaks, a Senior A lacrosse team this summer. They're a great group of guys from 21-32 years of age. Many of whom play College ball in the States or NLL during the winter (Ryan Benesch Minnesota Swarm, Mike Poulin Calgary Roughnecks, Rob Marshal Toronto Rock, Kasey Beirnes Toronto Rock, Corey Small Edmonton Rush) to name a few. We practice once a week and have two to three games a week depending on the schedule. Practices and home games are at the KW Recreation Complex on Father David Bauer Dr. in Waterloo. I will be there for the majority of the games and practices, but there are going to be a couple of days that I will unfortunately not be able to attend. I would therefore ask for third and fourth year students to apply. Taping must be proficient, and quick. There is always a lot of guys that get their ankles done. Tape and other supplies will be provided for. I do ask that students bring their own kits and fanny packs. I find this decreases confusion (everyone knows where stuff is in their own kit) and they can refill as necessary.

Applicants can email me at stephen.lobsinger@gmail.com

Thanks,

Steve

Job Posting

Dear Certification Candidates. We realize you will soon be busy getting ready for your final exams but we thought this year we would try and be a bit more proactive in the pursuit of students looking for the opportunity to a gain some valuable experience in both the field and clinical setting. Here at Carleton University, we will once again be looking for Certification Candidates to fill positions with our Varsity teams for the fall and winter semesters.
In exchange for your time and effort supporting our teams we will assist you in preparing for the written and practical portions of the CATA Exam. This will be accomplished with clinical experience with one on one mentoring through case studies and evaluation. Mock scenarios for both clinical and field setting will be run throughout the fall semester leading up to the exam. We have had great success with past candidates becoming certified through this process.
The teams will start their try-outs either mid August or early September. Your primary duties would include:
- Assist in providing coverage including prevention and immediate care for the Varsity sports teams for practices, home and away games Assist in the administration of the Athletic Therapy Clinic.
- Share the responsibility of providing rehabilitation treatments to all competing athletes registered and in good standing with the Department of Athletics; this also includes competitive club teams.
- Record and document all injuries sustained and treatments performed. Records include name, date of injury and/or treatment; circumstances of the injury, immediate care and follow up.
- Be responsible for ensuring that the Medical Questionnaires are completed and on file for your specific teams. Provide injury and rehabilitation status of the athletes to the appropriate coaching staff and Athletic Therapy staff on a daily basis.
- Offer advice to staff or intramural athletes from time to time for injury prevention, proper care and treatment of injuries including referral to appropriate health care providers.
- Be available for on site coverage of special sporting events held at the university as required.
- Perform other related duties as requested.

The potential candidates must understand that there is no such thing as a part time position in Athletic Therapy. We are looking for people dedicated to the field that are willing to put the hours needed to cover our teams. If you are interested in making a commitment to us, we will make a commitment to you!
A three month contract will pay $6,000, and a parking and fitness pass for the facility for the entire length of the contract. There are also a lot of possibilities for event coverage within the university and the Ottawa community.
If you are interested in applying, please send a resume, a letter indicating why you would like to work at Carleton University, and what you can offer to make Carleton Athletics even better. Please submit this by May 14, 2010. It should be addressed to:
