Survey requiring all students attention ASAP

Hello Everyone,

I will be coming to all of your classes this week to request your participation in this survey. Please take the time to fill this out as it will be a mini conference involving Certification Candidates from Eastern Canada (which will take place in Montreal....and yes, it will involve education but also social festivities). This would be a wonderful way to meet and network with Certification Candidates and Faculty from across Canada.

March Moustache Madness

March Moustache Madness
Ok ladies and gents, March is fast approaching and we all know what that means for the Athletic therapy program. The guys are going to be sacrificing their beautiful faces by growing mean ugly beards in the name of charity. This is the fourth annual March Moustache Madness, and with your help we’re going to make it the best yet.
So here’s how it works:
Guys:
-Pay $10 entry fee
-Shave all your facial hair on February 28th
-Over the next month grow as much facial hair as you can, grooming is optional but recommended if you’ll be trying to get any dates over this time
-At a date to be determined (likely either March 30th or 31st) shave your facial hair into the craziest design you can come up with.
-If you want to incorporate a costume in with your moustache this is acceptable and encouraged

Girls:
-Don’t think your getting out of this event with just laughing at the guys for the month
-You can get involved by donating $10 towards your class donation fund which could win you control over where the money is donated

Judging:
-Judging will be done by faculty members
-The judges will pick one winner from each year bringing us to 4 finalists
-An overall winner of the competition from the remaining finalists will then be selected
Judging is based on: creativity, amount of facial hair, design, difficulty of design, costume (optional yet seems necessary lately if you want to win)

Money: Ok here’s how the money will be divided up:
-The class who brings in the most money with their donations, will be given half the money and be able to pick the charity of their choice for the money to be given to
-The other half of the money will be given to the class of the winning guy, and they can pick the charity of their choice to donate the money to.

Let’s remember that this is for charity, so let’s get a great turnout from both the guys and the girls and have lots of fun with this event. We raised $800 last year which was awesome, let’s shoot for a $1000 this year!!!!

Regulation Update for OATA Members

From the OATA BoD:

Professional Regulation Project -- Update

One of the Association's priorities is to obtain regulation of the profession under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA). As discussed with members on previous occasions, there are two generic avenues for doing so: One, is to seek our own RHPA College; the other is to obtain agreement from an existing College to regulate athletic therapists as a class of members.

Both avenues would probably require a review by and positive recommendations from the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council (HPRAC), although it is conceivable that an existing College could use its legislative authorities under its existing profession-specific Act to put a regulatory framework in place for Athletic Therapists that achieves our objectives as a profession. The first avenue is particularly challenging because the size of our profession in Ontario may be seen to be too small to sustain our own College.

The OATA has asked the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care to initiate an HPRAC review. It is not likely, however, that an HPRAC review would get underway quickly. Because of cost considerations, HPRAC has been significantly downsized and all of its non-statutory reviews have been postponed to at least April 2011.

In the meantime the OATA has approached the Transitional Council for Kinesiology to explore that Council's interest in regulating Athletic Therapists as a class of members. Although it's certainly not the only possibility, there are obvious synergies and unique opportunities with Kinesiology. The Transitional Council for Kinesiology has only been operational since November, 2009 and its priority is to put in place foundational regulations and bylaws so that it may start registering members and open the way for the launch of the College of Kinesiologists. Nevertheless, the leadership of the Transitional Council has expressed an interest in pursuing the idea and we hope to have an initial response in March. Exploratory feelers to other colleges and professional associations as well.

If the response from the Transitional Council for Kinesiology (or from any other College) is positive, we aim to set up a joint working group between the OATA and the Transitional Council to determine how regulation of Athletic Therapist by the College of Kinesiologists would work and what it would look like. Our aim would be to complete this exercise within 12 months. Whatever comes out of that exercise would have to be approved by the OATA Board and membership before any commitments to proceed would be made. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care would also have to give its approval as, of course, would the Kinesiology profession.

It is important to note that we are not the only profession following the strategy. The OATA is aware of four unregulated professions that have approached, or have been approached by, an existing RHPA to explore the feasibility of their regulation by that College. We are carefully monitoring their progress in order to benefit from their experience and, thereby, hopefully speed our own march towards regulation

College Strike has been averted....unofficially and tentatively

From CP24

TORONTO — Ontario college teachers have voted 51 per cent in favour of contract offer, in results the union says are too close to call.

Lead college negotiator Rachael Donovan says instructors voted 51.25 per cent in favour of the deal and she's happy the unofficial results show many faculty saw this offer as fair and reasonable.

But the union says the 210-vote margin is too close to determine whether the offer has been accepted or rejected and notes about 300 mail-in ballots remain to be counted.

Both sides will now await the official province-wide results that must be certified after a review by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.

It's unclear whether such a narrow vote could still lead to a strike, as OPSEU says it will wait for final results before making a decision.

The instructors had already set a February 17 strike date, but if the offer is ultimately rejected, a new strike date will be determined.

An Incredible Opportunity to Consider!

Volunteer summer/ fall position

I will be running across the Trans Canada Trail, an estimated 12,000 km, to bring awareness to and raise money for testicular cancer. I dream of inspiring a nation to get active and be healthy! I am inviting all Canadians to come and join me. I want them to walk or run with me and share their story. My own story has inspired many to get up off the couch and take that first step towards an active and healthy lifestyle. Imagine what hundreds of stories can do! Through the Score Television network and website we will relay these personal narratives. Together we will inspire a nation, one story at a time.

I am looking for an Athletic therapist to come with us. Someone to “keep me together” My plan is to run 70 km a day for an estimated 171 days. This is a non profit event and all proceeds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society. There is no pay, but food and lodging will be taken care of.

So far the team consist of me (runner/interviewer) my fiancée Casey (driver of the Winnebago, food, laundry, etc..)., Soren,( marketing, filming, tech support). My two dogs Lex and Nala, running companions.

As your main focus will be to keep me running, you will be able to run or bike trails. Some which have never been walked on before. Witness the most breath taking scenery from across Canada. Meet people and hear first hand stories of inspiration and triumph from across the nation.

I believe this to be a great resume builder. This documentary when successful will be more highly publicized than any other trek across Canada.

The ideal candidate will be able to leave home for 6-7 months. Be comfortable living in an RV with 3 others people, plus 2 dogs. Comfortable with appearing on Television and website video’s. Want to take part in a cross Canada adventure aimed at inspiring a nation to get active and be healthy.

If you are interested please contact me for more information.
